Wondering the difference between ionic air purifier vs hepa filter? Here, we show you what makes them different and how to make a choice when you are considering an air purifier.

What are HEPA Filter and Air Ionizer

With air pollution on the rise, air purifiers are fast becoming a necessity. Air pollution is rampant in all parts of the world, and we need to take collective steps to bring it under control. Failure to do sowill be putting an entire generation at risk of suffering from respiratory and lung diseases.

The harsh truth is that we cannot do anything to change the outdoor air quality in just one day. However, we can try to keep the air inside our houses as pure as possible. Using air purifiers can help.

A purifier transforms the contaminated air inside your home and makes it clean. Some air purifiers use the HEPA filtration technology while others use the Air Ionizer.

HEPA air purifiers are very popular among users because they are known to remove more than 99% of impurities from the air. On the other hand, Air ionizers have also been a revolutionary discovery in the world of air purifiers.

However, you should not confuse them to be the same because they are widely different. Let’s look at these in detail and understand their differences.

Mode of Operation

The primary difference between HEPA air purifiers and air ionizers lies in how they work. Both of them successfully remove impurities from the air, but they use different techniques.

HEPA air purifiers use a full physical filter which helps to trap the airborne contaminants. These filters are designed by weaving individual glass fibers that can catch even minute particles.

HEPA purifiers suck the dirty air into the device which then passes through the filters, multiple times to make it clean.

The machine then releases the clean air into the room. This process continues in a cycle so that your room always remains healthy. Whenever new particles enter the atmosphere, they get sucked into the machine.

On the other hand, air ionizers use the ionic property to clean out the impurities from the air. They create and release negatively charged ions into the air which then bond with the positively charged particles. Once formed, these contaminated particles become too heavy to remain suspended in the air. The contaminants fall onto the ground or any nearby surface. You will have to clean up spaceto get rid of them entirely.

With HEPA purifiers, you will not have to worry about the existing contaminants to get into the air flow again.

However, if you are using an air ionizer, there is a chance that someone will kick back the impurities into the air when they are walking.

Area Covered

The area covered is a crucial aspect in which these two kinds of air purifiers differ quite significantly.

Since HEPA air purifiers have a specific filter in-built to purify the indoor air, their room area capacity is limited.

If we look at the room size, the maximum a HEPA air purifier can purify is one measuring around 700 sq. Ft. You will be amazed to know that air ionizers can cleanthe air over an area of 3,500 sq. Ft. quite easily.

Cost of Device

With all the factors noted, the price is unarguably one of the most common ones. You will find the air purifier models with HEPA filtration technology to be costlier as they are quite useful and are much more reliable as compared to the air ionizers.

With the initial purchase cost, you cannot ignore the routine filter replacement and yearly maintenance costs in the HEPA air purifier. In comparison, you will find the air ionizers to be quite cheaper.

If you are planning to get an air purifier soon, similarities and differences of HEPA and air ionizer is an often-asked question.

With all the information at your disposal, I am sure that you can now make an informed choice.
